315 BOWERY: No Lower East Side tour is complete without this address!! 😎 Hilly Kristal had a bar - named Hilly's on the Bowery - at this location from 1969-1972. He changed the bar to a music club in 1973, and renamed it CBGB & OMFUG. Part of the new name reflected the kind of bands Kristal wanted to book.. Country Bluegrass Blues (CBGB). The other part of the name was created because Kristal felt CBGB alone was too plain. He wanted to add something that sounded more crude.. OMFUG.. Other Music For Uplifting Gourmandizers. What's a gourmandizer? It's a glutton of music. Kristal reinterpreted the word "gormandize"; which is being gluttonous of food and drink.
The street pictures from the internet in today's post are as gritty as this neighborhood was. The population in this area included drug addicts, alcoholics, derelicts, and mentally disturbed people. Muggings were common by those preying on the down and out folks of the area, many carried weapons, and lots of trouble occured when these folks tried to enter the club. Kristal collected dozens of knives and other weapons over time. Great place, right? YES IT WAS!! 😃 More about this club tomorrow!!
